Hi! Nestlé® Drumstick® Ice Cream Cones and Oaks & Acorns Partner to Bring Generations Together for a Special Tree Planting on Thursday, July 27th

drumstickSan Diego, CA—July 24, 2006—Nestlé Drumstick, the original ice cream sundae cone, an American favorite since 1928, and Oaks & Acorns, a local nonprofit that brings seniors and children together for rewarding, learning experiences, will partner to host a special day of tree and flower planting and storytelling activities. On Thursday, July 27th at 10 a.m., the children of De Anza Child Development Center and the residents of Kearny Mesa Convalescent will join one another at Kearny Mesa Convalescent to learn how to plant seedlings and flowers in ice cream cartons and share stories while enjoying ice cream treats.

“This is an excellent opportunity to bring seniors and children together in a safe, healthy and fun learning environment, all while enjoying something almost everyone shares fond memories and experiences of… ice cream,” said Alannah Sinclaire, executive director of Oaks & Acorns. “Plus, the children learn to improve the environment, in this case -- the playground at De Anza Child Development Center -- in hands-on experience with seniors. Together, they can watch the seedlings and trees grow into something shady and beautiful for future generations to enjoy.”

On September 13th, the children and seniors will reunite to plant the flowers, developed seedlings and additional seven to eight foot oak trees at De Anza Child Development Center.  They will also kick off enrollment for Oaks & Acorns’ Great Oaks Dialogues program, which brings middle and senior high school students together with senior citizens to dialogue and deliberate about community issues.  The program fosters non-violent communication techniques and builds leadership skills that allow participants in diverse groups to learn from the differences and draw on the strengths that unite them.  Each group also has an opportunity to design a service project that addresses a community concern.

“We’re excited to partner with Oaks & Acorns for this event because we strongly believe in the importance of connecting generations,” said Judy Chen of Nestlé Ice Cream. “The lessons that children can learn from seniors and the experiences the two can share are invaluable, and we are happy to support this local nonprofit organization with such an important mission.”

All seedlings and flowers for this event are being donated by Rancho Jojoba Nursery and the larger developed oak trees are being donated by Yasuda Nursery. To learn more about these events, please call (760) 943-2333.

Hi! A big note of appreciation to The San Diego Foundation for a generous donation from the Civil Society Grant Program which was made possible by the Colonel Frank C. Wood Memorial Fund, the Ariel Coggeshell Fund and the Richard N. and Louette Smith Fund.

Hi! Oaks & Acorns also wishes to acknowledge the Wells Fargo Foundation for their continued financial support in helping to bring the generations together with their grant award in December 2004.

"I chose to work with Oaks & Acorns because I thought it would be mentally stimulating to work with an intergenerational group. I have come to find that it is not only mentally stimulating but vastly rewarding because I not only get to work with an intergenerational group but also interpersonally connect with all different types of people. I am grateful for the opportunity for personal growth, getting to meet new people, and all the snacks at meetings."
